Day 30: Romans 9/Psalm 62

Thursday March 25, 2004

As he says in Hosea: “I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people; and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,” and, “It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”
Romans 9:25-26 (New International Version)

God wants a big family!
Paul (the writer of this letter to the Romans) reminds us that while the Jewish people may be able to claim the blood line of Jesus and the initial contact with God’s purposes through the Ten Commandments, the Burning Bush, etc., that the promises are to ALL who believe, Gentile (non-Jew) or Jew alike. He makes it clear it’s not by birth that we have relationship with God; it is through trusting in Jesus.

Paul also makes a great point about a rock.
He says Jesus is a rock that some will fall on and stumble over, but others will build a life on this rock, Jesus. Paul says that Jesus is the corner stone, the most important part of building a new building.

Funny thing, the Psalmist/King David also mentions trusting in a mighty rock in our Psalm for the day:

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
Psalms 62:5-6

Both the apostle Paul and King David did not have a smooth, easy path to follow. Junk/bad stuff/life happened to them, even though they seemed to be two of God’s favorite people! Life has a way of throwing things in our paths. Sometimes it’s just an irritating pebble, other times it seems like a rock so huge that all we think we see is a dead end with no way around it. Be encouraged that David reminds us that God is strong, strong enough to help us handle anything. And that God is loving. What more do you need to get past the bumps in the road? When we know that God is strong, and God is loving, it is easier to choose to build our life on Jesus, the rock, the corner stone.

Today’s Prayer:
Lord, thank you that your promises are for all who believe, even me. Lord, thank you for your strength, and thank you for your amazing love. Help me to make good choices today that will build on the corner stone in my life, Jesus. Amen.

Memory Verse of the Week:
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. "
Romans 8:1-2 (New International Version)
