Day 36: Romans 15/Psalm 91

Wednesday March 31, 2004

A Lesson Learned Long Ago…
There we were in our Sunday best; anklets sliding down into the heels of our patent leather shoes and sitting on tiny little green wooden chairs. We were the first grade Sunday school class at the big church on the corner. Yes, there we were twenty little minds, some of us fidgeting wishing we could be outside building forts in the woods, some listening to a growl in our bellies wondering if it was going to be pot roast or fried chicken for dinner that afternoon and would we be lucky enough to have ice cream for dessert today?… when something incredible happened, something to remember forever, something that changed the way we looked at God!

The lesson and memory verse that morning was Psalm 91:4 “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Our teacher, Miss Pat, presented a flannel graph lesson that morning which was our favorite teaching method and Miss Pat our favorite teacher. The story was a true story about a fire in the barnyard of a family’s farm. The blaze consumed the chicken coop and all the animals inside. Dejectedly the family walked through the barnyard saddened and bewildered by their loss when they heard a wonderful sound, a muffled “peep peep”. The farmer walked toward the noise and moved aside a dead hen. He was delighted to see six little chicks hop out from under their mother’s wings. The chicks were oblivious to their brush with death and the great sacrifice that had been made for them.

How many times have we been sheltered under the wings of the almighty and like the chicks, hopped out totally unscathed? How great was the sacrifice our Savior paid for us? How could we ever choose to be anywhere else?

Today’s Prayer:
Father thank you for your amazing care for us and thank you that we need not fear anything that comes our way because the safety we have under your wings is a promise without fail.

Memory Verse of the Week:
"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD , "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
Psalm 91:1-2 (New International Version)
