“Restless”
in your Seattle?
Chapter 4 of
Hebrews continues with the journey motif. The goal is referred to as
rest. “For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work,
just as God did from his.” V. 10 (NIV) Oooh, the word itself sounds
relaxing. What a great way to describe what God’s life in us is all
about, rest.
The reason we can
rest is because “we have a great high priest who has gone through the
heavens, Jesus the Son of God,…” v.14 (NIV) who has cleared the way for
us to enter too. There is something about having a competent guide that
allows one to relax. A guide who knows where he’s going, who has been
there before, has permission to go, and even has permission for us to
come along with him! That’s Jesus.
The first time our
family traveled outside of the country was in 1981 to Santiago, Chile,
just before the uprisings began against Pinochet’s rule. There was a
lot of tension in the air. But friendly missionaries who knew the city
greeted us. They took us to the home of one of the Chilean church
members who guided us about the city, watching over us like a mother
hen. We rested in their presence. By contrast, when we arrived 2 weeks
later in neighboring Montevideo, Uruguay, we had no guide. No host
family. We were alone. We were not so at ease.
How would you
describe your journey in this world toward the next? Are you resting?
If not, why not? The promise is that if we’ll rest in what Jesus has
done and will do for us, we can “come boldly to the very throne of God
and stay there to receive his mercy and to find grace to help us in our
times of need.” (Living Bible)
Today’s
Prayer:
Lord, I do want rest. I want to find it in you. I want to stay with
you until I do.

Memory Verse of the Week:
"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the
shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD , "He is my
refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
Psalm 91:1-2 (New International Version)
