Mercy

You were made for a ministry

Phil George          philip.george@navy.mil          301-862-2867

The purpose of our Mercy Team is to provide opportunities for our committed believers to become “change agents” in our society through outreach and specialized ministries. This team leads our members to provide need-meeting and bridge-building ministries that extend far beyond the walls of our church with the goal of reaching the lost through acts of agape, or unconditional, love. The symbol for the Mercy Team is the fishing boat as we move into the world to become fishers of men.

Mercy Team ministries include our Kindness Project, Appalachia Service Project youth mission trips, adult mission trips, our wonderful Loaves & Fishes Ministry (Soup Kitchen), and many other outreach ministries.

Phil George.............................. philip.george@navy.mil

                                                301-862-2867

We attempt to surprise strangers with God’s love by giving them a cold soda, snack, or candy bar outside local stores one Saturday a month. We seek to create in them a love for God, hoping to stimulate them to discuss and consider God’s involvement in their lives.

In this nearby townhouse community we provide staffing for a small children’s library one hour each Tue. and Thurs. This promotes not only a love of reading, but other important values, as well as caring relationships. This is a stepping stone toward our larger plans to build and staff a community center here, making this a focus community. We are applying for grants for the building, which the landlord fully supports. This building will open opportunities through many programs, including sports, to meet a variety of needs and build relationships that we expect the Lord to truly bless.

Christmas in April

Bob Evans................................ 301-994-3377

On the last Saturday of April, our church fields a large work crew in this annual event run by Saint Mary’s county to improve housing for needy homeowners. By providing repairs and improvements on their houses, we attempt to boost their morale and help them to live a better life. We also strive to build Christian relationships that will help to sustain them in the future.

Angel Tree

Karen Farrah............................ karenfarrah@yahoo.com

                                                301-475-7959

Our coordinator tracks families in need throughout the year, meeting needs as they arise and placing requests for each family member on the Christmas tree. Individuals select cards from the tree and buy gifts. Then church families deliver them to the homes. Meeting material, emotional and spiritual needs of these families, while stimulating church involvement, is our goal.

Loaves & Fishes (Soup Kitchen)

Mona Famoso.......................... mfamoso@radix.net

                                                301-475-9349

Our purpose is to serve hot meals every Tuesday and Thursday. We also provide groceries on Thursdays and any time Social Services sends folks over who need food immediately. Another goal is to make meaningful personal contact to meet emotional and spiritual needs.

United Methodist Women

Marge Beaudwin....................... 301-373-5194

The UMW (United Methodist Women) is a mission organization whose purpose is to know God, support freedom through Jesus Christ, share fellowship and participate in local and global ministries of the church.

Dinner Bags—Fall and Easter

Phil George.............................. philip.george@navy.mil

                                                301-862-2867

This ministry provides needy families with bags of groceries that can be cooked into a family-sized meal. We begin distributing the empty bags to the congregation with a grocery list about a month in advance. Others contribute money for chickens to be added to the bags. Several weeks later the congregation returns their filled bags. Finally, a group of volunteers distributes the bags full of groceries to needy families in the community. The bags support our Angel Tree, Leonard’s Freehold, the Pregnancy Care Center and other families with special needs. These meals help families through critical times and give them renewed hope.

Nursing Home Bingo

Jeff Davis.................................. davisfamily5@chesapeake.net

                                                                301-475-2540

On the third Saturday of each month we meet at St. Mary’s Nursing Home to play bingo with the residents. Anyone who is interested in helping is invited.
